Nature


National Park De Alde Feanen
A short drive from vacation park 't Strandheem you will find National Park De Alde Feanen, a unique nature reserve in the heart of Friesland. This watery park consists of lakes, swamp forests and extensive reed beds where numerous bird species live. You can enjoy sailing, cycling or walking here and along the way enjoy the peace, space and Frisian nature. A perfect destination for a day out in nature!


Hiking and biking routes
In the vicinity of the park there are numerous hiking and cycling trails, including the Ziltepad, a long-distance hiking trail through the salt marshes of Friesland and Groningen. You also have, for example, the Doezumermieden route where forest and heath alternate, the Lauwersmeer route for the sporty cyclist and the shorter Route De Leijen where you will find nice picnic spots. These beautiful routes offer a unique way to experience the nature of the region.


Tidal walking and fierljeppen
For the adventurous vacationer, there are plenty of opportunities to experience genuine Frisian and Groningen traditions, such as wadlopen and fierljeppen. During wadlopen, you trek on foot with a guide across the bottom of the Wadden Sea at low tide, a special experience in this UNESCO World Heritage area. Departure locations such as Pieterburen, Lauwersoog and Moddergat are less than a 45-minute drive from 't Strandheem and some tours even take you as far as Schiermonnikoog. Also fierljeppen, the famous Frisian pole vaulting, is an experience to see or try yourself. In villages such as Buitenpost, Burgum and It Heidenskip, competitions and demonstrations are held regularly in the summer.


The Barefoot Trail
Experience nature in a completely different way on The Barefoot Path in Opende, near 't Strandheem. Take off your shoes and feel the grass, sand, water and mud under your feet as you walk through meadows, woods and streams. The trail is fun for young and old alike and is guaranteed to make you smile (and maybe get your feet a little dirty). An adventurous and refreshing experience in the middle of the Groningen countryside!
Cities and villages


Drachten
Just a fifteen-minute drive from 't Strandheem is Drachten, the largest town in the immediate area. This lively town offers a pleasant mix of stores, restaurants and culture. Stroll through the compact center with its quaint boutiques and terraces or discover Museum Dr8888 (Museum Drachten), where modern art meets local history. For an evening out, Drachten is also the place to be: there is a theater, cinema and regular live music. A surprisingly versatile city, ideal for an afternoon of shopping or a cultural outing!


Groningen
About half an hour's drive from 't Strandheem is the bustling student city of Groningen. This lively city combines historic charm with modern conviviality. Climb the famous Martinitoren for a magnificent view of the city, stroll through the atmospheric streets full of canals and monumental buildings or discover the impressive Groninger Museum, known for its striking architecture and special exhibitions. In the center you will find many great stores, terraces and eateries, from cozy cafes to trendy restaurants. Whether you enjoy culture, shopping or just strolling around, Groningen has something for everyone and is ideal for a day in the city during your stay at 't Strandheem.


Leeuwarden
Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland and named a UNESCO City of Literature in 2019, is an excellent destination for culture lovers. Here you can enjoy museums, historic buildings and local markets.


Giethoorn
A visit to Giethoorn, also called the "Venice of the North, " is definitely worthwhile. This picturesque village is known for its beautiful canals, thatched cottages and charming wooden bridges. Instead of driving or walking, here you sail through the village by whisper boat, canoe or sloop, a quiet and unique way to explore the area. Along the waterfront you will find cozy terraces, stores and museums that showcase the history of the watery area. Whether you opt for a relaxing cruise or a stroll along the canals, Giethoorn is a beautiful peaceful place full of romance and typical Dutch character.


The Frisian Lakes and quaint villages
